These numbers change daily so please open the Similarweb links for the websites to check the countries if you are interested. If you want to see more than 5, make a similarweb account trial (as they don’t ask for bank account details for the trial).

Knowing the demographics of the website you are putting content on is very important with language choice.

Male vs Female Demographics

Every tubesite has wildly different demographics. Ie, some women report to liking YouPorn more than PornHub (both owned by MindGeek).

This can be a big deal as women are starting to make up more and more of pornography consumers, depending on the content you make (solo male masturbation as an example), you may want to focus more time on the websites where your highest demographics are.

The disparity can possibly be due to the way women watch porn, being different from men. So women will feel more comfortable on websites which overhighlight those norms, rather than websites where it is more niche. Both men and women will use all websites, but there will be a demographic difference. You can find out these statistics by searching the web and finding articles like this (1 / 2).

Language Populations

There are two kinds of lists for this.

List of languages by total number of speakers and List of languages by number of native speakers.

Both are important for this exercise due to the type of words you use in your video titles, descriptions and metatags.

If you are making content for English, remember that there are more people who speak English as a second language than a first language. Therefore simpler terminology might be more useful for that language. See here.

If you are uploading content in Japanese, then you may use a variety of colourful language due to the Japanese language generally only being spoken as a first language and only in Japan itself. See here.

The biggest 20 languages by Speakers are: English, Mandarin (Chinese), Hindi (Indian), Spanish, Arabic, Bengali (Indian), French, Russian, Portuguese, Urdu (Indian), Indonesian, German, Japanese, Arathi (Indian), Telugu (Indian), Turkish, Tamil (Indian), Cantonese (Chinese), Wu (Chinese), Korean…

The biggest 20 languages by Native Speakers are: Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, English, Hindi (Indian), Bengali (Indian), Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Punjabi (Indian), Marathi (Indian), Telugu (Indian), Wu (Chinese), Turkish, Korean, French, German, Vietnamese, Tamil, Cantonese (Chinese), Urdu (Indian)…

Translation issues

Be aware that the state of translation services mostly, from what I understand, is that when translating between two languages, the service will most likely do it with English in the middle.

As an example; User inputs Arabic word > Welsh word translation. That is what most people think happens. Though I believe what happens is: Arabic word > translates to English word > Welsh word.

This can be a huge problem if the languages are very different from English. As a slight error on the first translation might be fine, but carrying on that error it can lead to another error, leading to a totally separate meaning entirely.

If you are trying to translate to a language, from something other than English as the language you are typing in to translate with, try and source a translation website that is local to either your country or the country you are translating from. Ie, use Yandex for Russian, etc.

Languages with Highest Porn Views

Here are a few article examples:

Please remember each year to look for updates on these countries. As things can change.

Though if we take the above lists as gospel, you are looking at:

English: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia.

Spanish: Mexico, Spain, Argentina.

Hindi / Tamil (etc): India.

German: Germany.

Portuguese: Brazil.

French: France.

Russian: Russia.

Japanese: Japan.

Polish: Poland.

Turkish: Turkey.

Italian: Italy.

Dutch: Netherlands.

Swedish: Sweden.

Arabic: Egypt.

Romanian: Romania.

Filipino: Philippines.

Why this kind of information is important, with three example websites:

1: xHamster only lets you pick 1 translation alongside your native tongue.

2: Xvideos has a ton of languages to choose from, but you may only choose 10.

3: Pornhub has a limited variety, but you can choose all of them for each video.

Your Statistics

Trial and error with languages is extremely important.

I clicked on two older videos of mine and screenshot the heatmaps of the countries viewing those videos. You can see that there can be some vast diversity in who likes which videos. In the second image there is an obvious demographic from English Speaking Countries (I am Australian so this makes sense). In the first image, the largest demographic comes from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Though in both images you can see that Brazil didn’t watch my content at all, though Portugal did (speaking same language). And generally, Russia, Eastern Europe and Africa did not like both videos.

There are two things you can take from looking at those images.

1. I am not meeting the needs of Brazil.

2. My translations seem good for English, West European languages, and North and South East Asian languages.

It is complicated to decide. What you would ideally want is no area being too few probably. The whole map should at least be Orange. Though I am not sure if this is possible due to the way content is made. Though it is something to think about when you are choosing your languages.

If I were translating to Japanese, South Korean and Taiwanese and had very few viewers from that region, I would likely change languages. If I was not translating to French, but France was red across a lot of uploads, then I would likely decide to translate my videos to French.
